CIUDAD GUATEMALA, Guatemala -- Ivan Sopegno has resigned from his position as head coach of Guatemala, the Federación Nacional de Fútbol de Guatemala announced Thursday.

In a press release, the governing body Guatemalan football said the manager felt it best to leave before his contract expires at the end of the year, allowing the federation to discuss a replacement at an upcoming meeting.

The 52-year-old took charge in May 2014, posting a 8W-5D-10L record. He led the side to the 2014 Central American Cup final, but it failed to advance past the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup’s group stage.

After edging past Antigua & Barbuda, 2-1 on aggregate, to earn a place in the fourth round of CONCACAF qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the Chapines are third in Group C with a 1W-0D-1L record. A pair of matches in March against the United States could potentially play a significant role in their ability to advance.

Sopegno coached Guatemalan power Comunicaciones from 2008-2014, guiding it to five domestic titles.
