Gonzalez, Miranda receive Costa Rica call

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica – The Herediano defensive duo of defender Leonardo Gonzalez and Allan Miranda will join Costa Rica for of its upcoming World Cup qualifier against the visiting United States, Federación Costarricense de Fútbol announced Saturday.

They replace fellow defenders Francisco Calvo and Cristian Gamboa. Calvo left Friday’s 2-0 win at Trinidad & Tobago in the 41st minute with a reported ankle injury, while Gamboa is suspended due to yellow card accumulation.

The 35-year-old Gonzalez played in all three of the Ticos’ games at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, but hasn’t appeared in an international since 2009.

Miranda, 29, has earned two caps, starting in a 3-1 win over Panama in a World Cup qualifier on September 6, 2016.

Costa Rica will host the U.S. on Tuesday at the Estadio Nacional.
