JUTICALPA, Honduras – Honduras snapped a six-game winless streak with a 2-0 victory over visiting Cuba in an international friendly on Wednesday at the Estadio Juan Ramon Breve Vargas.
It was the host’s first triumph in a FIFA-recognized match at home in 2015 after five attempts, including a 2-0 loss to Mexico in a World Cup qualifier last month.
Forward Alberth Elis -- the joint-top scorer at the 2015 CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifying Championship with four goals -- netted twice in a winning effort.
In the sixth minute, the 19-year-old Olimpia standout raced through the middle to receive a superb pass from Romell Quioto and slot past onrushing goalkeeper Disovelis Guerra with his right foot from 12-yards out.
He doubled the advantage nine minutes after the break, sliding in from four yards to first-time Carlos Will Mejia’s right-sided cross.
The setback extended Cuba’s winless streak to six games (0W-1D-5L).
