SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – It was perhaps fitting that the United States won the 2020 Concacaf Women’s Under-20 Championship on Sunday, the day that International Women’s Day was celebrated around the world.
The U.S. was a show of strength and resilience during the tournament in outscoring opponents 44-1 in their seven matches, plus rallying from a 1-0 early deficit against Mexico in Sunday’s Final to claim a 4-1 win.
“I think it shows what women’s soccer about right now,” said U.S. Head Coach Laura Harvey following Sunday’s Final.
“The fact that it was two women’s head coaches on the sideline shows where the game is going and how we can continue to develop,” added Harvey.
With the 2020 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup berth having been clinched in last Friday’s semifinal victory against Dominican Republic and a sixth CUW20 title won on Sunday, Harvey’s attention will now turn to August’s World Cup in Panama and Costa Rica.
“We can develop who we want to be and we now have a huge several months ahead of us to prepare for the World Cup,” said Harvey.
One of the stars of the tournament for the U.S. was FW Mia Fishel, who scored 13 goals on her way to earning Golden Ball honors as the 2020 CUW20 Most Valuable Player.
Fishel’s brace played a big role in Sunday’s win, but she was quick to note that it could not have happened without the help of teammates.
“We stuck to our game plan, we knew we weren’t going to be out of this, we just had to keep playing as a team and finish every shot we got,” said Fishel following the match.
“I just wanted to focus on every opportunity I had. I have amazing teammates who got me the ball and I just tried to finish it,” concluded Fishel.
