MIAMI, Florida – The 2022 Concacaf Women’s Under-17 Championship in the Dominican Republic kicked off on Saturday with the United States, Mexico, Panama and Costa Rica all
winning in style.
In Group E at the Estadio Olimpico Felix Sanchez in Santo Domingo, Mexico broke out for a 10-
0 win versus Nicaragua.
Valerie Vargas (11’, 28’, 31’) notched a hat trick, Daniela Meza (17’, 70’) and Maribel Flores (42’, 57’) each had braces, while Tatiana Flores (53’), Montserrat Saldivar (89’) and Layla Sirdah (90+2’) also etched their names onto the scoresheet for El Tricolor’s first three points of the tournament.
Panama also enjoyed a winning start in Group E, notching a 5-1 victory against Trinidad and
Tobago. Daniela Hincapie (33’, 41’, 59’) was the star of the day for the Canaleras with a hat trick and was joined on the scoresheet by Delineth Rivera (21’) and Ninelys Castrellon (90+2’).
The Soca Warriors did not leave empty-handed, however, as Breana Smith scored in the 48’ to
give her side a goal.
The Estadio Panamericano in San Cristobal was where Group G got going, as reigning CWU17 champions the United States took flight in a 20-0 victory over Grenada.
Charlotte Kohler (21’, 48’, 50’, 90+3’) and Shae Harvey (12’, 26’, 30’, 59’) each had four goals, Melina Rebimbas (9’, 36’, 55) tallied a hat trick, Mia Oliaro (16’, 61’) and Claire Hutton (72’,
90+1’) both had braces, while Nicollette Kiorpes (34’), Cameron Roller (64’), Lauren Martinho (76’), Amalia Villarreal (81’) and a Abigail Williams own goal (43’) accounted for all the scores in a victorious start for the North Americans.
The other game in Group G ended with Costa Rica emerging with a 4-1 win over Puerto Rico.
Sheika Scott (25’) and Luciana Gonzalez (29’) gave the Ticas a 2-0 lead by the half-hour mark, but the deficit was cut in half by Puerto Rico’s Fabiola Martinez in the 35’.
However, a strong second half with goals from Josselyn Briceno (58’) and Valentina Rivera (80’) paved the way for the Costa Rican victory.
