ORLANDO, Florida. - Jamaica will try to impose their Gold Cup experience on first-time participant Suriname in the opening game of Group C of the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup at Orlando’s Exploria Stadium on Monday.
These two teams will meet for the first time in Gold Cup history, as Jamaica will be participating in their 12th Gold Cup while opponents Suriname will be playing it for the first time.
They have faced each other on the playing field before in other occasions. In total it has been five times making, the Gold Cup 2021 opener being their sixth encounter.
Out of the prior five encounters, the victory has gone to Jamaica four times. The only win for Suriname was a 3-1 in 1996 in the Caribbean Cup. The last time these two teams played against each other was in Concacaf Nations League Qualifying in 2018, where Jamaica handed Suriname a 2-1 defeat.
Each team has firepower upfront and strikers that can score a game-changing goal.
The Reggae Boyz have a team with a lot of experienced players like forward Cory Burke, who has scored against Suriname, tallying the winning goal in that 2-1 victory in 2018. Burke has 18 caps with the national team and has scored has five goals, but none in a Gold Cup, making the first game of the 2021 Gold Cup an extra incentive for him to score. The attacker brings experience, technical skills and pitch intelligent to the table for Jamaica
Suriname comes into the game on Monday with confidence in the changes made in their federation in the last couple of years that has created better opportunities to become competitive against other Concacaf teams.
The 2021 Gold Cup is a prime stage to show what they are all about. Striker Gleofilo Vlijter brings international experience, speed, and the hunger to succeed to the team and scored 10 goals for Suriname in the 2019-20 CNL.
Both teams have a lot to gain. Jamaica can show their seniority, while Suriname can make history by winning their first-ever game in a Gold Cup against an old foe.
