ORLANDO, Florida – Only weeks after making his United States national team debut and scoring in his first two matches, Dom Dwyer was traded by Sporting Kansas City to Orlando City SC in a blockbuster deal on Tuesday.
Sporting could accrue as much at $1.6 million in a record-breaking Major League Soccer deal.
“Dom adds tremendous strength to our attack. He brings speed, energy and strong technical ability,” Orlando general manager Niki Budalic remarked. “He has grown as a player over the years into one who is a threat whenever he’s on the field.”
This will be Dwyer’s second stint with Orlando City. In March 2013, Sporting KC loaned Dwyer to Orlando City in the USL Pro league, where he scored 15 goals in 13 league games before being recalled to SKC.
Dwyer, who became a U.S. citizen in March, scored in his U.S. debut in a 2-1 win over Ghana on July 1 and added another goal in a 1-1 draw with Panama in the CONCACAF Gold Cup opener for both teams on July 8.
The 26-year-old forward has scored five goals in 15 matches during the current MLS season. He notched a career-high 22 goals in 2014
