ARLINGTON, Texas – The 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup continued with Mexico earning a 2-nil win against Suriname in Group A on Wednesday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
César Montes broke the deadlock in the 57’ with a header from the center of the box, connecting on a corner kick service from Alexis Vega, to place Mexico in front.
Montes doubled Mexico’s lead in the 63’, striking with a right-footed attempt to capitalize on another corner kick opportunity.
Edson Álvarez nearly earned the third for Mexico in the 91’, placing a header of his own on frame that was saved by Suriname goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen, who finished with four saves.
Mexico goalkeeper Luis Ángel Malagón finished the match with two saves and his first clean sheet of the campaign.
The victory seals a place for Mexico and Costa Rica in the Quarterfinals as the top two sides from Group A.
Mexico will meet Los Ticos on Sunday at Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada, with first place in the group on the line.
Suriname will remain in Arlington, Texas, to take on the Dominican Republic on Sunday.
