MIAMI, Florida – The First Round of the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup Prelims will close on Saturday night with what should be a very entertaining affair between Guatemala and Guyana at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Guatemala’s attack has been soaring in Concacaf competition of late, with 39 goals across eight matches in the 2019-20 Concacaf Nations League and the First Round of Concacaf World Cup Qualifying for Qatar 2022.
In addition, the Chapines have yet to concede a goal in that span, which should give them a big boost going into Saturday’s encounter as they try to edge closer to an 11th Gold Cup group stage appearance.
Guatemala also demonstrated their defensive prowess last Saturday in a friendly with fellow Central Americans El Salvador, keeping the Cuscatlecos at bay for 90 minutes in a 0-0 draw.
With offensive weapons like FW Jairo Arreola, FW Marvin Ceballos and MF Alejandro Galindo and defensive stalwarts Moises Hernandez and Gerardo Gordillo, Guatemala will fancy their chances of advancing.
Standing in the way, however, is a Guyana side that is looking to reach the Gold Cup group stage for a second consecutive time.
A squad with a heavy English football influence including Bolton Wanderers DFs Liam Gordon and Reiss Greenidge, along with Queens Park Rangers MF Stephen Duke-McKenna and Bournemouth pair MF Nathan Moriah-Welsh and FW Connor Kurran-Browne will make the Golden Jaguars a formidable foe.
Guyana have also enjoyed positive results of late in their Prelims tune-up, with a 1-0 win over Bermuda on Tuesday.
In what will be the fifth meeting between the two nations, Guyana will hope to achieve their first victory against the Central Americans.
