GLENDALE, Arizona -- Canada's CONCACAF Gold Cup scoring sensation is ready to start filling the net again.
Sixteen-year-old Alphonso Davies, who is tied for the competition's scoring lead with Kevin Parsemain (Martinique) on three goals each, can play against Jamaica in Thursday night's quarterfinal at University of Phoenix Stadium.
Davies injured his lower leg after scoring in a 1-1 draw with Costa Rica on July 11, just days netting twice in a 4-2 win over French Guiana. He came on as a substitute for the final 17 minutes of the last Group A game, a scoreless draw with Honduras on July 14.
"Alfonso is in good condition," Canada head coach Octavio Zambrano told CONCACAF.com on Tuesday. "He had a little bit of an issue there, but it's gone. Right now, he's 100 percent."
The Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder has been one of the tournament’s revelations, something that hasn't shocked Zambrano.
"It doesn't surprise me because I have seen him in MLS games," said the 59-year-old Ecuadorian. "I have seen him do things that are similar to what he has performed in this Gold Cup.
"There is always that issue whether if he feels the weight of what a national team jersey has, and there is a difference between a club jersey and a national team jersey. But he doesn't seem to have any sort of pressure about that. On the contrary, he's having fun and I want him to continue like this, allow him to do what he knows how to do best, play football, play soccer."
