HOUSTON, Texas – Just three games into his Concacaf Gold Cup career, Canada FW Jonathan David has made a lot of history.
The 19-year-old became the youngest player ever to score a hat trick in a Gold Cup match in Canada’s 7-0 win over Cuba, and in that same match he and teammate Lucas Cavallini became the first teammates to score hat tricks in a single Gold Cup match.
Yet for David, the most important part of that slice of history is that it has helped the team.
“It means that we have a lot of attacking threats going forward,” said David in an interview with Concacaf.com. “We can score obviously and to make history is an amazing feeling, we just try to help the team in any way we can.”
David and Cavallini have teamed up to score nine goals in the 2019 Gold Cup. Their partnership is one that has quickly grown on the training field and in matches.
“It comes in every training, every camp we’ve been to. We’re both strikers and we both like to score, so we just try to set up each other every time we can and if one of scores or anyone else scores, we’re happy,” said David.
Next up for David and Canada is Saturday’s quarterfinal against Haiti, a match in which Canada is approaching with the same mindset as always.
“The mentality has been the same since the beginning. We came here to win every game if we can, so this game is another game and we have to win it, which is what we’re going to try to do,” concluded David.
