MIAMI – One of the most exciting leagues around the world just came to a close, as the now five-time champions Tigres lifted the trophy for the Apertura 2022, making them the champions of the Liga MX Femenil.
It was a much-anticipated Final for fans of the Mexican league, as it was a rematch of the 2018 Final in which Tigres came out victorious against Club America.
This time, both teams arrived to the big stage and the most anticipated match of the season with a reinforced squad, after delivering amazing performances in the semifinals and throughout the season.
The first leg of the Final was played at the emblematic Estadio Azteca on Saturday evening, where the world didn’t just witness how Tigres grabbed the advantage in the series, but also how history was written with a record 52,654 fans gathering in the Coloso de Santa Ursula to see this match.
The only goal of the night came from the boots of Lizbeth Ovalle, who in the 48’ scored a striking volley from outside the box, after racing past the Club America defense. Nevertheless, both teams traveled to Monterrey for the second leg with the final result and the championship still up for grabs.
On Monday evening in the second leg, a sold-out audience of 41,615 fans went to the Estadio Universitario to see the last match of the Apertura 2022. Both teams started strong, Club America having some chances to even out the scoreline, but Ovalle appeared again in the 22’, scoring her eight goal in Liguilla finals.
Las Aguilas had some chances again once the second half started, however, Belen Cruz scored the second goal of the night for the Amazonas in the 50’, making the dream of becoming champions once again even more real.

With this result, Tigres are now the most decorated team in the Liga MX Femenil with five trophies (2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022) making head coach and former Canada international Carmelina Moscato the first woman and second foreign coach to win the championship.
