LAKELAND, Fla. - Over the weekend, the U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team completed a ten-day final preparation for the Concacaf championship to be played in Managua Nicaragua from April 19 to 29.
In the closing of the camp, the United States played three games against the U17 of Japan who are preparing for the World Cup to be played in Uruguay in 2018.
In the first game of the series, the teams tied 0-0. In the second, US won (4-1) when Sunshine Fontes scored two goals and Tori Hansen along with Payton Linnehan added one. The friendly series ended with a 2-0 win with Fontes and Hannah Bebar scores and goalkeeper Angelina Anderson saving a penalty kick.
The Americans were seeded into Group B where they will face Costa Rica, Bermuda and Canada in the tournament that will qualify three teams to the 2018 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Head coach Mark Carr called up 24 players for this camp, including 10 who have scored in international matches for the USA this year.
Thirteen players on the roster are in double-figures in caps in their U-17 careers, led by defenders Kate Wiesner (27) and Kennedy Wesley (26), who were both part of the previous cycle and played at the 2016 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Jordan.
The U-17 WNT is coming off a victory in mid-February at the Copa Provincia de Buenos Aires tournament in which the USA defeated Argentina, Uruguay and Chile.
