HEERENVEEN, Holland – Guatemala international Marco Pappa confirmed Friday that he has parted ways with Dutch-side Heerenveen.  His contract, which was set to expire in 2016, was terminated by mutual agreement between both parties, making the midfielder free to join any team.

The 26-year-old arrived at Heerenveen in the summer of 2012 after a successful four-year spell with Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire.  In the Windy City, Pappa played in 122 matches and scored 26 goals.

A series of injuries resulted in a lack of regular playing time for the former Municipal standout in Holland, allowing him only 12 appearances.

It is undetermined whether Pappa will stay in Europe or look for a club on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean.

In a message on his Twitter account, he wrote: “Many thanks to everyone for your messages of support… I am sure that everything will start to improve.”

Pappa has scored six goals in 39 matches for Guatemala, netting twice during the World Cup Qualifying campaign for Brazil 2014.
