MIAMI, Florida – Another Concacaf classic should be in store on Wednesday night as El Salvador’s Alianza battle with fellow Central American giants Comunicaciones of Guatemala in the second leg of the 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf League Round of 16 at the Estadio Cuscatlan in San Salvador, El Salvador.
The two sides, both former Concacaf club champions, played to a thrilling 2-1 final in the first leg in Guatemala, with the Chapines taking the slim advantage into their away leg thanks to goals from Andres Lezcano and Junior Lacayo.
The historic Estadio Cuscatlan should make for a very intense atmosphere with no margin for error by either side.
Comunicaciones will certainly fancy their chances of eliminating a Salvadoran side from the tournament for the second consecutive round. The Guatemalans are actually unbeaten all-time against teams from El Salvador in the SCL, with a 2W-1D-0L record.
GK Kevin Moscoso has been in anchor in net for Comunicaciones with 11 saves thus far in the tournament, while Lezcano and Lacayo each have two goals in the 2021 SCL.
Alianza no doubt have the tools to turn things in their favor though, with midfield wizards Marvin Monterroza and Narciso Orellana, plus striker Duvier Riascos, who scored the Alianza goal in the first leg.
Then there is veteran FW Rodolfo Zelaya, who came off the bench and had three shots in the first leg. With four career goals in the SCL, Zelaya is a player who always shines in big Concacaf games.
