New England Revolution face Club America in first encounter

MIAMI. - A first-time meeting awaits as New England Revolution host Club America in the first leg of their 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup Quarterfinal series on Tuesday night at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

The Revolution are making their fifth tournament appearance and third in the quarterfinals, their best result to date.

In the previous round, the New England Revolution eliminated LD Alajuelense 5-1 on aggregate. Prior to that, the Revs defeated Panamanian side Club Atletico Independiente 4-0 on aggregate.

Tomás Chancalay is having a good tournament for the U.S. side with four goals in the tournament. The Argentine midfielder scored twice against Club Atletico Independiente in Round One and two against LD Alajuelense in Round of 16. 

Carles Gil is the leading scorer for the Revolution in league play and another important player to account for. The 2021 MLS MVP has been the club’s leading assist man for three consecutive seasons.

Club America is the tournament’s all-time winner with seven Concacaf Champions Cup titles. Last winning in 2015–16, the current group is headed by Brazilian coach Andre Jardine.

The 13-time Mexican champions recently eliminated its top rival Club Deportivo Guadalajara in the Round of 16. Julian Quiñones, Diego Valdes, and Henry Martin – three key attacking players – scored in the first leg. Alejandro Zendejas contributed the insurance goal in the second leg to cement the series on aggregate.

Quiñones was part of Tigres’ 2020 tournament-winning squad and now aims to accomplish that feat with the Mexico City club. Quinones and Zendejas lead America with two goals and one assist each in this edition.

Jonathan Dos Santos leads Club America in passes (234) has an 89% pass accuracy in 3 matches. He previously faced the Revolution in 2018 and 2019 as a player for LA Galaxy.

Goalkeeper Luis Malagon has also been key with eight saves for America. One of Mexico’s national team goalkeeping options, Malagon has two clean sheets in CCC through two rounds.

America boasts a 100% effectiveness in the quarterfinals, which it will look to preserve. In its seven previous quarterfinal participations, America has advanced on each occasion.
