Monterrey take care of business at home vs. Comunicaciones

MONTERREY – Monterrey of Mexico are through to the next round of the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup after posting a commanding 3-0 victory against Comunicaciones of Guatemala in the second leg of their Round One series on Thursday night at the Estadio BBVA in Monterrey, Mexico.

With the result, Monterrey earned a 7-1 win on aggregate and advanced to the Round of 16 where they will face the winner of the series between Jamaican club Cavalier FC and FC Cincinnati of Major League Soccer (MLS).

Monterrey came out looking to make sure there would be no drama on the night, and an early redirect into goal from center back Hector Moreno off a cross from Maximiliano Meza gave Rayados a 1-0 lead in the 10’. It was the first ever Champions Cup goal for the veteran Mexico defender.

Monterrey stayed on the front foot and soon enough the margin was doubled to 2-0 in the 32’ when an initial clearance from the Comunicaciones defense fell to Jesus Corona, who stroked home a left-footed strike.

Comunicaciones never stopped in their attempts to find a goal, but the night belonged to Monterrey, as the five-time Concacaf champions stayed in command as played drifted into the second half.

Brandon Vazquez then stretched the lead to 3-0 in the 79’ with a left-footed shot that rolled past Comunicaciones GK Fredy Perez for the goal.

From there, the Monterrey calmly saw things out to register the clean sheet victory and secure a spot in the next phase of the tournament.
