LONDON – Watford announced Tuesday that Mexico’s Miguel Layun has been loaned to Porto for the remainder of the 2015/16 season.
Just a day earlier, Jesus Corona -- his international teammate -- transferred from FC Twente to the Portuguese power. Another Mexico standout, midfielder Hector Herrera, has been with Porto since June 2013.
"I feel good,” said Layun. “I'm happy to be here and be part of this great team that is accustomed to fighting for the top because of its prominence.”
Layun, who won a pair of Liga MX titles with Club America (2013 Clausura, 2014 Apertura), had joined Watford in January from Spain’s Granada. After that move, the 27-year-old defender/midfielder helped the Hornets win promotion to the English Premier League, appearing in 21 total games and scoring one goal - the opener in the first game of the current season at Everton.
Since earning the first of his 34 caps for Mexico in 2013, the former Veracruz standout has become a mainstay in the squad. He appeared in four qualifiers for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and started all four matches in Brazil. Earlier this summer, Layun played every minute of the Tricolor’s run to a record-extending seventh CONCACAF Gold Cup title, including the 3-1 win over Jamaica in the final.
