LEVERKUSEN, Germany – Mexico international Javier Hernandez will miss the start of the German Bundesliga season, his club Bayer Leverkusen announced Tuesday.

The 28-year-old forward broke his right hand as a result of a fall at home a day earlier. After successful surgery, Hernandez is expected to be sidelined for at least two weeks, meaning he will sit out Saturday’s opener at Borussia Monchengladbach.

Although no official announcement has been made, the injury will probably force Hernandez to forgo Mexico’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against El Salvador (September 2, away) and Honduras (September 6, home). The Tricolor (4W-0D-0L, 12 points) has already earned a place in the final round CONCACAF qualifying.

Hernandez netted 17 goals in 28 Bundesliga appearances last season.
