GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala – El Salvador international Rafael Burgos has joined Universidad de San Carlos, the Guatemalan club announced Tuesday.
The 27-year-old forward returns for a second stint in Guatemala after helping FAS to a runner-up finish in the 2015 Salvadoran Apertura by scoring five goals in 23 games.
Burgos spent the early part of his career in El Salvador with Alianza (2004-09, 2011-12), Santa Tecla (2009-10) and UES (2010), before joining Petapa (2012) in Guatemala. From there, he made the jump to Europe, signing with – but never playing for -- Austria’s SV Reid, and ultimately moving on to Banik Ostrava (Czech Republic, 2012); Kecskeméti (Hungary, 2012-13); Győri ETO (Hungary, 2013-14), Minnesota United FC (USA, 2014) and Fredrikstad (Norway, 2015).
For El Salvador, Burgos has scored 13 goals, competing in two CONCACAF Gold Cups (2013, 2015) and three Central American Cups (2011, 2013, 2014). He has appeared in four World Cup qualifiers for Russia 2018.
Universidad de San Carlos finished 11th out of 12 teams in the 2015 Guatemalan Apertura.
