BRONDBY, Denmark -- Brondby announced Thursday that it acquired Costa Rica international Marco Ureña from fellow Danish Superliga side FC Midtjylland for winger Jonas Borring as part of a transfer swap.
Ureña, who had joined Midtjylland in August 2014 from Russia’s Kuban Krasnodar, signed a three-year contract with the 10-time Danish champion.
"We have been looking for reinforcements for our offense and with Ureña we have a striker who can provide competition for our other strong attackers,” said Brondby sports director Troels Bech. “We followed Ureña for a while and we know he’s a strong forward, who is not afraid and will work hard for the team. At same time, he has good speed, so it fits well into our concept.”
The 26-year-old started his professional career with Alajuelense in 2008, before moving to Kuban Krasnodar three years later.
With Costa Rica, Ureña appeared in four games at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, scoring in a 3-1 win over Uruguay. In addition to World Cup heroics, he was joint-top scorer at the 2011 Copa Centroamericana with three goals and added three more at that year’s CONCACAF Gold Cup. Ureña has also competed in the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup (4 games, 1 goal) and the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup (7 games, 3 goals). Most recently, he played in the Copa America Centenario (2 games, 0 goals).
