LIBERIA, Costa Rica – Michael Umaña will return to Costa Rican football on Wednesday, when he joins Municipal Liberia for preseason training, the first-division side announced via its Facebook page.
The Costa Rica international had spent the last two years with Persepolis, signing with the Iranian club after appearing in four of the Ticos’ five matches during a run to the 2014 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals.
His career has taken him to numerous clubs, including Herediano, Brujas, Liberia Mia and Saprissa (all Costa Rica); LA Galaxy and Chivas USA (both USA); and Comunicaciones (Guatemala).
With Costa Rica, Umaña has also played in the 2006 FIFA World Cup (3 games, 0 goals), the 2004 Olympic Football Tournament (4 games, 0 goals) and three CONCACAF Gold Cups (2005, 2013, 2015). The 33-year-old was also a member of the squad that captured the 2013 Central American Cup crown.
