GLASGOW, Scotland – Costa Rica international Cristian Gamboa is heading north to continue his club career, joining Scottish power Celtic on a three-year deal from English Premier League side West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday.
The 26-year-old defender was one of the standouts during Costa Rica’s run to the 2014 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals and, most recently, he competed in June’s Copa America Centenario.
Gamboa played for Municipal Liberia from 2006-10, before signing a contract with Norway’s Fredrikstad. He moved to FC Copenhagen of Denmark in 2011 and, a year later, went back to Norway on loan with Rosenborg, eventually earning a permanent move.
In July 2014, Gamboa was transferred to West Brom, but made only 11 total appearances in the Premier League.
Gamboa was expected to fly to Costa Rica later in the day ahead of World Cup qualifiers against Haiti (September 2, away) and Panama (September 6, home).
Celtic has reached the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League’s group stage and will face Barcelona, Manchester City and Borussia Monchengladbach.
