PORTLAND, Oregon – Canada international Will Johnson was acquired by Toronto FC from the Portland Timbers in a deal announced Friday.
In exchange, the recently crowned Major League Soccer champion received a conditional second round pick in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft and financial considerations.
“I’m excited to return to my hometown of Toronto and play in front of one of the best fan bases in MLS,” said Johnson. “I look forward to this new challenge and cannot wait to meet my new teammates.”
Johnson made a combined 74 appearances and scored 17 goals in three years of MLS regular- and post-season play with Portland.
In addition to the Timbers, the 28-year-old has also played with the Chicago Fire (2005), Dutch sides Heerenveen (2006-07) and De Graafschap (2007-08), and Real Salt Lake (2008-12).
Johnson was part of the Real Salt Lake side that won the 2009 MLS Cup and finished as runner-up to Mexico’s Monterrey in the 2010/11 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League, falling 3-2 on aggregate in the final. He has scored four goals in 13 all-time SCCL games.
For Canada, Johnson has earned 38 caps and scored four goals, including the lone tally in a 1-0 victory over Honduras in a World Cup qualifier last month. He has competed in three CONCACAF Gold Cups (2009, 2011, 2013).
