LISBON, Portugal – Benfica announced Thursday that it has completed the outright purchase of Mexico international Raul Jimenez from Atletico Madrid for €12 million, bringing the total deal to approximately €22 million (US$24.2 million). The final number is believed to be largest-ever transfer fee for a Mexican player.
The 25-year-old forward spent the 2015/16 season with the Portuguese power after it paid for 50 percent of his economic rights, which were reportedly valued at slightly below €10 million. He went on to score five goals in 28 league games and also netted three times in UEFA Champions League play, including once in a 2-2 draw against visiting Bayern Munich in a quarterfinal, first-leg match on April 13, 2016.
Starting his professional career with Club America in 2011, Jimenez played in 94 Liga MX regular- and post-season matches, notching 35 goals. He also netted twice for the Aguilas in Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League play and captured the 2013 Mexican Apertura title, before moving to Atletico Madrid in August 2014.
With Mexico, Jimenez won the 2012 Olympic Football Tournament title and the 2015 CONCACAF Cup. He most recently appeared in three matches at the Copa America Centenario.
