MIAMI, Florida – The group stage of the 2022 Concacaf W Championship in Monterrey has wrapped up after an exciting week of action.
On an individual level, there have been a number of standout performances.
Canada FW Janine Beckie has no doubt been one of the stars. In addition to scoring in Canada’s 2-0 win versus Costa Rica, Beckie led the group stage with three assists in helping her team win Group B.
Beckie also led all players in goal-scoring situations with 13 and tied teammate Julia Grosso and Jamaica FW Khadija Shaw for goal participations (goals + assists) with four.
Grosso and Shaw have impressed as well. Grosso tied with Shaw for the most goals in the group stage with three, with Grosso scoring on 75 percent of her shots, while Shaw led all players in shots on target with six.
Another Canadian, Kadeisha Buchanan stood out for her ability to connect and link with teammates. No player had more completed passes in her three matches than Buchanan’s 194.
The dynamic Costa Rican duo of Maria Coto and Katherine Alvarado drove opposing defenses nuts, evidenced by the eight fouls each player received during the group stage, tops among all players.
In goal, Trinidad and Tobago GK Kimika Forbes amassed the most saves out of all the shot-stoppers in this tournament with 18, seven more than Rebecca Spender of Jamaica. Spencer also tied with Daniela Solera of Costa Rica, Casey Murphy of the United States and Kailen Sheridan of Canada for most clean sheets with two.
At a team level, both the U.S. and Canada were the only teams to gain nine points from their three games, and they each had the most goals scored with nine. Canada owned the edge in assists with eight, shots on goal (19) and passes (1,248).
Jamaica tied with Canada for the most balls recovered with 38, while it is no surprise to see that Costa Rica were first among all teams in fouls received with 39.
Thus far in the 12 games, there have been 34 goals, a drastic difference than the 64 goals scored during the group stage of the 2018 CWC. Across the board there have been 74 saves made by goalkeepers and 12 clean sheets recorded, while every match has ended with a winning/losing result.
The majority of the goals have come from open play (22), but there has been a decent share of headers (5) and penalty conversions (5).
Overall, it has been an impressive CWC through the group stage and the four matches that remain in the knockout round should prove to be even more exciting.
