MONTERREY, Mexico – Host nation Mexico will be taking center stage at the Estadio Universitario in Monterrey to make their 2022 Concacaf W Championship debut against Jamaica in Group A.
All over the region, fans will be waiting to see these two nations compete in what will be a crucial contest.
They have faced each other three times before in the CWC, with Mexico leading the all-time series 3W-0L-0D, having scored a total of nine goals. Jamaica has scored two goals against Mexico in these matches.
Mexico will be making their 10th appearance, and it is their second time hosting the CWC. Runners-up in 1998 and 2010, this year's goal for El Tricolor is to qualify to the FIFA Women’s World Cup at Australia-New Zealand 2023, the Olympic Games at Paris 2024 and the first edition of the W Gold Cup.
Names that are familiar to Concacaf will take to the pitch to try to help the home side deliver a great performance, as they did in the Qualification stage, where Mexico won Group A. Katty Martinez, Alicia Cervantes, game-changer Stephany Mayor, Diana Ordonez, Maricarmen Reyes and, on the rise player, Maria Sanchez.
Jamaica will be making their seventh appearance and will try to top their best performance to date, a third place finish at USA 2018, in which they earned a ticket to the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France, becoming the first Caribbean nation to participate in a Senior Women’s World Cup.
The Reggae Girlz will have the services of the players that helped the team become winners of Group C in qualifying. Game-changer and top scorer of the CWC Qualifiers, Khadija Shaw (9 goals), alongside Trudi Carter (5 goals) and emerging young star Jody Brown (5 goals).
It is the first match for these two teams, but three points will be paramount. Mexico will try to raise their hand and show what it is like to be playing on home soil, while Jamaica will be stepping up and trying to prove why they are one of the teams to be watched in this edition of the CWC.
