MIAMI, Florida – Panama are off to a dream start in Group B of League A of the Road to W Gold Cup thanks to a 3-0 triumph over Guatemala on Wednesday night at the Estadio Pensativo in Antigua, Guatemala.
It was a busy first half between the two sides with plenty of shots on target for each. But only one attempt was good enough to find the back of the net and that came for Panama in the 35’.
Marta Cox found Aldrith Quintero, who then flipped a pass over to Riley Tanner and the composed finish from the striker gave the visiting Panamanians a 1-0 advantage.
Guatemala tried to muster a response in the second stanza, but were repeatedly turned away by a resolute Panama defense.
Panama then gave themselves a big lift in the 73’ by scoring their second of the night to make it a 2-0 affair. After an initial crack at trying to turn in Tanner’s deep cross, Marta Cox smashed home a right-footed shot for the Panama goal.
Carmen Montenegro then put the icing on the cake for Panama in the 82’ when a clearance from the Guatemalan defense fell perfectly for the substitute to latch onto and fire into goal to complete the 3-0 scoreline.
