MIAMI, Florida – League C of the Road to W Gold Cup concluded on Tuesday with Cuba riding a brace from Eunises Nunez to defeat Saint Lucia 4-1 in Group B at the Estadio Antonio Maceo in Santiago de Cuba.
The result gives Cuba a first-place finish in the group with a perfect four wins from four matches. Saint Lucia end their RTWGC campaign in second-place in the group.
Cuba went right to work on finding an early goal and Eunises Nunez obliged, putting the home side ahead 1-0 in the 8’.
Nunez wasn’t done though, and she doubled her team’s advantage 2-0 in the 14’ by collecting a pass from Jessica Alvarez and slotting home a left-footed strike for the goal.
Cuba then stretched their lead to 3-0 in the 36’ when Elisabet Espinosa tucked home a shot from the right side of the Saint Lucia area.
Saint Lucia refused to throw in the towel, and they pulled a goal back in the 63’ with a good finish from Racquel John at the tip of the area to make it 3-1.
But Cuba proved to be too strong and the scoreline read 4-1 in the 73’ when Nahomi Aguilar converted from the penalty spot after a handball in the area.
The Cuba defense took over after that, seeing things out to register their final three points of the campaign.
