JEONJU, Korea Republic – Honduras (1W-0D-2L, 3 points) completed its participation in the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup with a 2-0 win over Vietnam (0-1-2, 1) on Sunday at Jeonju World Cup Stadium.

The result gave the Hondurans third place in Group E, while first-place France (3-0-0, 9) and second-place New Zealand (1-1-1, 4) progressed to the Round of 16.

Following a scoreless first half, Sendel Cruz struck for the first goal in the 76th minute, when he netted with his right foot from seven-yards out after Vietnam goalkeeper Tien Dung Bui ventured in close proximity to the penalty spot and failed to gather in Darixon Vuelto’s low cross from the left.

The Vietnamese, nearly leveled in the 85th minute, but Quang Hai Nguyen’s left-footed effort from 29-yards out crashed off the right post and glided across the goal line.

In the third minute of stoppage time, Jorge Alvarez added an insurance tally off another Vuelto assist.

It was Alvarez’s second goal of the competition, equaling him with Amado Guevara, Mario Martinez, Bryan Rochez and David Suazo for the most scored by a Honduran in FIFA U-20 World Cup history.
