BRADENTON, Florida – A goal in the 89’ minute from substitute Andersen Williams helped Canada edge Haiti 2-1 in the third-place match at the CONCACAF Women’s Under-17 Championship.
With the victory, Canada has qualified for the 2018 Under-17 Women’s World Cup in Uruguay, the sixth time Canada has reached an Under-17 Women’s World Cup.
After a scoreless first half in which Haiti had the better looks at goal, Canada’s offense would kick into gear early in the second half and they took a 1-0 lead in the 48’ through Jordyn Huitema.
Caitlin Shaw played a long ball up to Huitema, who got a step ahead of the Haitian defense and struck a left-footed shot with aplomb past Haiti GK Madelina Fleuriot for the goal.
Haiti sought a response and Dumonay was inches away from pulling her side level when a left-footed shot in the 68’ deflected off a Canada defender and dribbled just wide.
Dumonay’s efforts would be rewarded though, as six minutes later she earned a penalty kick after being brought down by Karpenko in the area. A minute later in the 75’ Dumonay stepped up and calmly converted the spot kick to make it 1-1.
That set the stage for a dramatic finish and it would be Williams from off the bench to score the late winner for Canada.
A corner kick was floated into Huitema, who headed back across goal and Williams was there to meet it and sneak in a header in the 89’ to give Canada the 2-1 victory and a ticket to Uruguay.
