MEXICO CITY – The Mexico under-17 national team traveled to Spain on Thursday for a training camp before heading to the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.
As part of its program, the current world under-17 champion will play three friendlies in Marbella against the UAE (September 30), Uzbekistan (October 2) and Ivory Coast (October 4). All three sides are participating in the FIFA event as well.
In 2011, Mexico won the World Cup as host, defeating Uruguay 2-0 in the final before a crowd of nearly 100,000 at the Estadio Azteca.
The Tricolor qualified for this year’s tournament by capturing the 2013 CONCACAF Under-17 Championship. A 70th minute goal by Salomon Wbias broke a deadlock and lifted his team to a 2-1 win over host Panama in the final.
For this year’s World Cup, Mexico has been drawn into Group F and will play of each of its games in Al Ain City against Nigeria (October 19), Iraq (October 22) and Sweden (October 25).
