PANAMA CITY, Panama -- Mexico struck twice within a two-minute span in the first half to break open a scoreless game en route to a 2-0 victory over Honduras and to the Group D crown at the 2013 CONCACAF Under-17 Championship on Thursday night.

Ulises Jaimes and Luis Hernandez tallied for the Mexicans (2-0-0, 6 pts.), who have outscored their foes, 7-1, in the competition. Goalkeeper Raul Gudino recorded the shutout.

The result meant El Tri will play Guatemala, which dropped a 1-0 Group C decision to the United States in the first game of the doubleheader at Estadio Rommel Fernandez, in a quarterfinal match at 9 p.m. EDT on Sunday. The Hondurans (1-0-1, 3 pts.) will meet the U.S., the Group C winners, in another quarterfinal at 6 p.m. EDT on Sunday.

The quarterfinal winners will qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup, which will be played in the United Arab Emirates from Oct. 17-Nov. 8.

After controlling the opening half hour, the Mexicans were rewarded for their efforts in the 30th minute. A Honduran clearance was deflected to Jaimes, who raced in on goal along with defender Jose Murillo before he beat goalkeeper Cristian Hernandez from six yards for a 1-0 lead.

Only two minutes later, Mexico was celebrating again. This time, Hernandez launched a long free kick from the left side that Pedro Teran headed from six yards to the far left post past the goalkeeper Hernandez for a two-goal advantage.

El Tri continued to attack into the second half as Ivan Ochoa's close-range shot forced Hernandez to dive to his right to save a third goal from going in, in the 53rd minute.

The Hondurans came as close to scoring as a team could get in the 61st minute, when captain Luis Santos blasted a 15-yard effort off the underside of the crossbar.
