CHILLAN, Chile -- Mexico (1W-1D-0L, 4 points) inched closer to a place in the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup’s knockout rounds thanks to a 0-0 draw with Australia (0W-1D-1L, 1 point) on Wednesday at the Estadio Nelson Oyarzún Arenas.
The CONCACAF champion sits second in Group C, two behind leader Germany (2W-0D-0L, 6 points), which posted a 4-0 win over Argentina (0W-0D-2L, 0 points).
Eduardo Aguirre had Mexico’s best chance of the game in the 28th minute, when he hit the woodwork off a Jose Gurrola feed.
Tricolor goalkeeper Abraham Romero preserved the draw with two key saves.
In the 56th minute, he thwarted Kye Rowles’ point-blank header and then stopped a Panos Armenakas free kick with four minutes remaining in normal time.
The Mexicans return to action on Saturday against Germany with the group title at stake.
