SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras – Canada struck for a trio of unanswered goals after falling behind to defeat Haiti 3-1 in the 2015 CONCACAF Under-17 Championship opener for each on Saturday.

The victory completed a Group B tripleheader at the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano that started with Mexico’s 3-1 win over Panama and was followed by a 4-0 victory for Costa Rica against St. Lucia.

Haiti took a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute, when Ronaldo Damus turned on a through ball from Bellora Charles and fired in with his left foot while falling backwards from 12-yards out.

A response from the Canadians was swift as Duwayne Ewart ran onto a telling feed from Munir Saleh in the left side of the box and placed a shot past charging goalkeeper Emmanuel Chery to make it 1-1 in the 34th minute.

Ten minutes later, Haiti almost regained the lead.  Jude Maitre broke into the left side of the box, beating goalkeeper Luciano Trasolini with an effort that looked destined to find the back of the net.  Kadin Chung, however, appeared from nowhere to slide across the goal line and cleared the ball to safety.

Chung’s heroics proved inspirational for his teammates, who would take a 2-1 lead in the second minute of first-half stoppage time.

Harrison Paton delivered a corner kick from the left side that Chery appeared to touch slightly with an outstretched hand.  Matthew Baldisimo was there to head it off a Haitian defender and over the line from three-yards out.

After being thwarted by Chery in a 1v1 situation earlier, Chung got on the scoresheet in the 73rd minute.  Saleh played another pinpoint pass on the ground into the left side of the box for the defender, who calmly slotted an effort with his right foot into the right side of the goal from seven-yards out.

Canada returns to action on Tuesday against Costa Rica, while Haiti will square off against Panama in the first match that day.
