MIAMI, Florida – This Friday at 7:00 PM ET, Concacaf will be airing a re-broadcast of two Concacaf Gold Cup classics, the first being the 2013 Gold Cup group stage match between Panama and Mexico, followed by the 2019 Gold Cup quarterfinal between Haiti and Canada. Both matches will be shown on Concacaf’s Facebook and YouTube pages, plus the Concacaf App.

While no team from the Caribbean has won a Gold Cup, there have been plenty of instances when a team from the islands went deep into the tournament.

Jamaica 1993

The first nation to reach the final four of a Gold Cup was Jamaica in just the second edition in 1993. Led by Devon Jarrett’s two goals, the Reggae Boyz of that era finished second in Group A behind the United States to punch their ticket to the semifinals, where they were eliminated by Mexico.

Trinidad and Tobago 2000

The next Caribbean side to advance to a Gold Cup semifinal was Trinidad and Tobago in 2000. Boasting Concacaf legends like Dwight Yorke and Russell Latapy, the Soca Warriors defeated Costa Rica 2-1 with a Golden Goal to set up a date with Canada in the semifinals.

Because the other semifinal pitted South American invitees Colombia and Peru, Trinidad and Tobago’s clash with Canada served as the de facto Concacaf Final and a berth in the 2001 FIFA Confederations Cup was on the line. However, in the end, the Canadians managed to earn a 1-0 result, breaking the hearts of the Soca Warriors.

Guadeloupe 2007

While the U.S. might have won the 2007 Gold Cup, for many it will be remembered for Guadeloupe’s incredible semifinal run. With the likes of former UEFA Champions League finalist Jocelyn Angloma and Golden Glove winner Franck Grandel, Les Gwada Boys qualified for the knockout round where they stunned Honduras 2-1 to reach the semifinals. Ultimately, Guadeloupe were eliminated by the narrowest of margins, a 1-0 defeat to Mexico, but in their Gold Cup debut Guadeloupe had won the hearts of all neutrals.

Jamaica 2015, 2017, 2019

2015 would prove to be a history-making Gold Cup, as Jamaica became the first Caribbean nation to reach the Gold Cup Final after they defeated the U.S. 2-1 in the semifinals. Eventually, the Reggae Boyz would lose to Mexico in the Final, 3-1, but that defeat was avenged two years later in the 2017 Gold Cup semifinals when Golden Glove winner Andre Blake and Jamaica edged El Tricolor 1-0 to advance to a second straight Gold Cup Final.

A late goal for the U.S. resulted in a 2-1 loss for Jamaica, but the island nation was back at it two years later in the 2019 Gold Cup when they qualified for their fourth Gold Cup semifinal.

Unfortunately for Head Coach Theodore Whitmore’s side, it ended with a 3-1 defeat to the U.S., but Jamaica’s finish was nonetheless historical, as 2019 marked the first time that two nations had reached the semifinals of a Gold Cup.

Haiti 2019

In addition to Jamaica, Haiti qualified for their first ever Gold Cup semifinal. Les Grenadiers became a team to watch during the 2019 tournament for the three second half comebacks they made, including overcoming a 2-0 deficit to Canada in the quarterfinals in a 3-2 win. In the end, Haiti would fall 1-0 to Mexico in extra time, but Haiti’s performance, coupled with another strong display from Jamaica, showed that fans of the Gold Cup can expect much more from the Caribbean in the years to come.
