MIAMI, Florida – The 2022-23 Concacaf Nations League Finals are right around the corner and exciting match-ups are on the docket in both semifinals.
If history is any indication, the Panama-Canada semifinal will be decided by the thinnest of margins.
In the overall history of this series, Canada own a slight advantage, with four wins and two defeats, while the other six matches have resulted in draws. Canada have narrowly outscored their Panamanian counterparts 12-8 in those 12 matches.
The majority of the matches between the two sides have come in Concacaf World Cup Qualifying, with eight out of the 12.
All four Canada wins in the all-time head-to-head have come in World Cup Qualifying, while Panama have two wins against Canada in WCQ and there has been one draw. Scoring-wise in those qualifiers, Canada have outscored Panama 9-5.
Panama have held serve in front of their home fans, though, with two wins and two draws in qualifiers played on Panamanian soil, including their last meeting on March 30, 2022 when a Gabriel Torres goal lifted Panama to a 1-0 win over Canada.
Earlier in the Final Round of qualifying for Qatar 2022 in October 2021, Canada defeated Panama at home 4-1 with goals from Alphonso Davies, Tajon Buchanan, Jonathan David and a Panama own goal.
There have been just two matches between Panama and Canada in the Concacaf Gold Cup. Their first meeting came in the 2011 group stage when a Dwyane De Rosario penalty just after the hour mark looked like it would be enough to secure a Canada win, only to see Panama score in second half stoppage time through Luis Tejada to earn a 1-1 draw.
The two sides met again just two years later in the 2013 Gold Cup in their group stage finale and once again they shared the spoils in a goalless draw that earned Panama a first-place finish in the group, while Canada were eliminated.
In the lone two friendlies played between Panama and Canada, those matches also finished as draws, with a 2-2 final in 2008 and then another scoreless encounter in 2014.
Now, these two sides will meet for the first time in Concacaf Nations League play and no doubt another tight, hard-fought affair will be expected.
