THE VALLEY, Anguilla -- Puerto Rico earned their first points of the Concacaf Nations League on Tuesday night at the Raymond E. Guishard Technical Center with a 3-2 win over Anguilla.
A scramble in front of the Anguilla goal in the 37th minute provided the best chance for either side, but it was a long-range effort on a tough angle from Jose Ferrer in the 39th minute that opened the scoring for the visitors.
Puerto Rico snuck in a second goal before the break, again from long-range when Giovanni Padron struck in the 44th minute.
El Huracán Azul kept up the pace to start the second half when Gerald Diaz added a third in the 54th minute.
But not ready to go down without a fight, Anguilla pulled one back when Kyle Lake-Bryan hit a nifty overhead kick in the 76th minute to get the fans on their feet.
Calvin Morgan battled through injuries to slip a second past Angel Molinari in the 89th minute to set up a tense ending, but the equalizer wasn’t meant to be.
For Puerto Rico, the win may not be enough to catch Guatemala, but the three points are a great building block for future tournaments. Though the comeback ultimately came up short, Anguilla have some momentum to work with heading into their final match next month.
