MANAGUA, Nicaragua – Nicaragua hosts Suriname in a high-stakes affair in Group D of League B of the 2019-20 Concacaf Nations League on Monday at the National Stadium in Managua, Nicaragua.
The encounter will be the final fixture of the group and may well decide the 2021 Gold Cup of both teams.
The last meeting between the two nations ended in a 6-0 Suriname victory over Nicaragua. CNL leading scorer Gleofilo Vlijter scored four of his 10 goals during that match.
Following that encounter, Nicaragua got back to winning with back-to-back victories over Dominica. That streak was snapped with a 1-0 defeat at Saint Vincent and the Grenadines on Friday.
Suriname picked up a 4-0 home win over Dominica on Friday to take a firm hold over the second place in the group with 10 points, one point behind Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
The South American nation could be contending for the top of the group, and promotion to League A, if Saint Vincent and the Grenadines fails to win at Dominica, while Nicaragua could be in the mix for the Gold Cup qualifiers with a big win.
The last encounter between these two nations in Nicaragua was a FIFA World Cup qualifier for Russia 2018 on June 8, 2015. The hosts picked up a 1-0 win that day with a goal from Carlos Chavarría.
