MIAMI, Florida – League A of the 2023-24 Concacaf Nations League returned to action on Thursday with three matches in Group B, highlighted by Jamaica progressing to the quarterfinals.
Suriname vs. Haiti
The day in the group began with a 1-1 draw between Suriname and Haiti at the Dr. Ir. Franklin Essed Stadion in Paramaribo, Suriname.
The result leaves Haiti with three points, while Suriname have two points through three matches.
Haiti came out the stronger of the two sides and dominated possession, but it was Suriname who struck first, breaking the deadlock in the 17’.
It was done in sensational style, too, as Ridgeciano Haps cut off a Haitian pass, slalomed past two defenders and powered a left-footed shot past Haiti GK Jhony Placide for a 1-0 Suriname lead.
Haiti were unfazed and regrouped nicely, especially at the start of the second stanza and found the equalizing goal in the 51’ courtesy of Mikael Cantave.
Don Louicius did well to find Cantave with a pass, and after recovering possession from an initial challenge, Cantave curled a left-footed shot into the top right corner of goal to even the score at 1-1, which held until the final whistle.
Grenada vs. Jamaica
Jamaica remained atop Group B after posting a 4-1 victory at Grenada at the Kirani James Athletics Stadium in St. George’s, Grenada.
The Reggae Boyz now have seven points after three games, thus securing their spot in the quarterfinals, while Grenada remain on one point.
The first goal for Jamaica landed in the 12’ when Dishon Bernard’s header off a corner kick was saved by Grenada GK Jason Belfon, but Kevon Lambert was right there to turn in the rebound for a 1-0 lead.
It was doubled to 2-0 in the 22’ thanks to Shamar Nicholson, who received a pass from Romario Williams and finished with aplomb.
Grenada did not get down, though, and pulled a goal back in the 30’, as Trevon Williams redirected in a shot in front of the Jamaica goal to make it 2-1.
Grenada tried to get back on level terms, but Demarai Gray had other ideas and extended the lead to 3-1 in the 74’ with a strong strike from a narrow angle.
Bobby Reid then put the finishing touches on the 4-1 win in the 87’ with a goal in transition to seal the three points.
Cuba vs. Honduras
The day in League A concluded with a 0-0 draw between Honduras and Cuba at the Estadio Olimpico Felix Sanchez in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Cuba remain in second place with five points, with Honduras right behind on four points. The two teams meet again on Sunday.
It was an active first half with Honduras largely in control. The best look for the Catrachos came from Andy Najar, whose shot fizzed wide in the 28’.
The best scoring chance of the first 45 minutes went for Cuba right before halftime when Honduras GK Edrick Menjivar was caught off his line and Yasnier Matos looked set to score from close-range but was unable to get off an accurate attempt and the ball rolling across the line was scooped up by Menjivar.
Honduras wrestled back momentum and if not for a double save from Cuba GK Raiko Arozarena in the 57’, the visitors would have had a goal.
Honduras kept the pressure on, while Cuba looked to strike on the counter, but neither side was able to break through, resulting in a share of the spoils
