LOOKOUT, Montserrat – Haiti secured promotion to League A and booked their qualification for the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup with a 4-0 victory against Montserrat in Group B League B at the Blake’s Football Complex in Lookout, Montserrat.
Hopeful to climb out of the bottom of the group, the hosts were on the offensive early. Montserrat generated a free kick, but James Comley's attempt in the ninth minute was blocked.
It was not until the second half that the game opened up, as Duckens Nazon opened the scoring with some evasive footwork inside the box in the 49th minute. The attack originated on a goal kick and quickly transitioned forward on a pass from Derrick Etienne Jr.
Frantzdy Pierrot extended the lead by two with a menacing header in the 60th minute. The assist came from a cross near the touchline from left back Alex Christian.
Montserrat tried to respond when Joseph Taylor connected with captain Craig Braham on a free kick in the 67th minute, but the center back could not get the hit he wanted on the header.
Etienne Jr. made it a three-goal lead for the visitors in the 70th minute. The chance came on a rebound from a Pierrot attempt but was quickly resolved for Etienne’s eight international goal.
Montserrat continued to fight for their first goal in the match with Lewis Duberry driving into the box to force a save in the 80th minute. The Emerald Boys earned a corner late but were unable to find their way past Haiti goalkeeper Kymani Nelson.
Mondy Prunier came off the bench to extend the lead for Haiti to 4-0 in the 84th minute. The assist came from Jeppe Simonsen, another second half substitute, on a ball played out wide from midfield by Bryan Alceus.
The three points place Haiti permanently at the top of Group B in League B. With its assured first place finish, the Les Grenadiers gain promotion to League A and are booked to participate in the upcoming Gold Cup.
