NASSAU, Bahamas.- Haiti and Costa Rica each took a point from a thrilling match at the Thomas Robinson Stadium in Nassau, Bahamas that ended 1-1 in League A action.
Jose Guillermo Ortiz scored the first-ever goal in Nations League history for Costa Rica, nodding a cross from Ricardo Blanco into the top corner of the net in the 53rd minute to put the Central Americans in the lead.
But in the 82nd minute, Herve Bazile was able to get a cross in from near the corner with Frantzdy Pierrot rising to head the ball in for the equalizer.
The home side may leave feeling it should’ve gotten all three points, but Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas made a number of great saves, the strongest of which came in the 68th minute when he denied a long-range bullet from substitute Duckens Nazon.
Each team had opportunities to poke ahead in in the final moments that they were unable to capitalize on.
Costa Rica hit the post and had a point-blank effort saved by Haiti goalkeeper Johny Placide in the final five minutes of the match, and a deflected shot on the final play of the match drew Navas into action.
But the match ended level, with the Ticos now headed home to play fellow group rival Curacao next week.
