The action resumed in Group A of League B in the 2023-24 Concacaf Nations League with two encounters on Sunday.
Saint Lucia is in first place following a home victory over Saint Kitts and Nevis. Guadeloupe is in second position by one goal of difference after also collecting a second win, this time over Sint Maarten.
Guadeloupe vs. Sint Maarten
Guadeloupe took a 4-0 victory in its home opener against Sint Maarten at the Stade Municipal de Sainte-Anne in Sainte-Anne, Guadeloupe.
Goalkeeper Teddy Bartouche was asked to make a stop early as the visitors combined for a menacing attack from Chovanie Amatkarijo and Gerwin Lake in the 12’. Sint Maarten had another warning shot one minute later, but the home side would take momentum.
Matthias Phaeton scored the first goal of the encounter from the penalty marker in the 23’ with a strike into the left bottom corner. Tairyk Arconte was tackled inside the box by defender Duane Tjen-A-Kwoei on the prior play to gain the penalty kick for the hosts.
Ange Plumain opened his account in the 25’ as Guadeloupe converted again from the penalty spot. Luther Archimede was the man taken down in the box, as goalkeeper Tyrell Richardson attempted to stop the onslaught by the home team.
Archimede then extended the lead to 3-0 in the 40’ by tapping in a cross from Plumain.
Plumain converted for the second time with a tap home of his own in the 58’ minute. Plumain and Arconte were in a two-on-one situation and it was the latter who opted to play the pass to his open teammate.
Guadeloupe are off to a winning start and will look to build on it in October when they travel to and host Saint Lucia. Sint Maarten will look to overturn its last place start as it plays a home and away series with Saint Kitts and Nevis.
Saint Lucia vs. Saint Kitts and Nevis
Saint Lucia downed Saint Kitts and Nevis 2-0 at the Darren Sammy Cricket Ground in Gros Islet, St. Lucia.
A corner kick in the 20’ brought one of best opportunities of the first half for Saint Lucia, but Jevick MacFarlane was denied by the right post.
Saint Kitts and Nevis goalkeeper Julani Archibald then kept things scoreless with a stop at the far post in the 40’ as right back Alvinus Myers looked connected with Ridel Stanislas.
Saint Lucia goalkeeper Vino Barclett also came up with a crucial save in the 49’ to deny Keithroy Freeman at the far post.
Gregson President opened the scoring with his individual footwork inside the box on the other end to take the lead for the home side just seconds after the Barclett save.
Ridel Stanislas extended the lead for Saint Lucia in the 75’ with a long-distance chip from left field that bounced off the far post.
Barclett came up with another big stop in the 81’ to deny the visitors a chance to cut the deficit. Seconds later, Archibald was asked to make another save to impede the counter attack on the other end of the field.
The victory puts Saint Lucia in first place on goal difference with home and away encounters against Guadeloupe in October. Saint Kitts and Nevis will also play home then away next month with Sint Maarten as its opponent.
