GEORGETOWN. - There was little to separate the Cayman Islands and the British Virgin Islands on Monday, with the teams playing to a 1-1 draw at the Truman Bodden Stadium in George Town in a Concacaf Nations League League C Group D matchup.
It’s the same result the two teams battled to just three days ago, with each starting off their CNL tournaments with a pair of points from two matches.
The home side had an excellent chance in the 10th minute, with FW Corey Smith sending a left-footed ball to the back post that was headed on goal by Jabari Campbell. British Virgin Islands GK Daniel Gilford made the stop, but left the rebound for Campbell; however, the forward only could put it against the post.
The Cayman Islands won a penalty after Trey Ebanks was pulled down in the box, and Cayman Islands MF Jonah Ebanks stepped up and converted to the left of Gilford in the 23rd minute to push the hosts ahead, 1-0.
The British Virgin Islands’ halftime adjustments seemed to have been effective, though. Just seconds after the second half resumed, the visitors found an equalizer in the 46th minute. After BVI FW Jamie Wilson’s initial header was blocked by Cayman Islands GK Albertini Holness, Wilson put the rebound home, scoring his second-ever CNL goal.
Cayman Islands DF Joshewa Frederick Charlery had a chance for a winner just five minutes from the final whistle, coming forward and getting his head on a free kick, but he sent the shot wide, and the teams shared a point.
Both teams now turn their attention to group rival Puerto Rico, with Cayman Islands hosting El Huracan Azul on June 9 and the British Virgin Islands traveling to Puerto Rico for a June 12 contest.
