MIAMI, Florida – League A of the 2023-24 Concacaf Nations League continued on Friday with the six teams from Group B in action.
Haiti vs. Cuba
The day started off with a Caribbean classic, as Haiti and Cuba played to a 0-0 draw at the Estadio Panamericano in San Cristobal, Dominican Republic.
Both teams had a couple probing efforts in the first half, with the best chance being a Derrick Etienne free kick for Haiti that required a save from Cuba GK Raiko Arozarena.
Cuba got their first good look at goal just after the hour mark when a three-on-two break led by Luis Paradela resulted in a foul right outside the area. Paradela assumed free kick duties, but fired over the crossbar.
Haiti had the bulk of chances to close the contest, including a golden opportunity for Schneider Borgelain in the 89’, yet once again Arozarena was there to make the stop to secure a point for the Cubans.
Grenada vs. Suriname
Grenada and Suriname kicked off their respective campaigns earning a point apiece in a 1-1 draw with some late excitement at the Kirani James Athletics Stadium in St. George’s, Grenada.
There were chances for both sides in the first half that forced the two goalkeepers into some big saves. Grenada shot-stopper Jason Belfon had to react quickly to snag a Gleofilo Vlijter header in the third minute, while just after the half-hour mark Suriname GK Warner Hahn snuffed out a great chance for Saydrel Lewis.
The intensity increased as full-time neared, and Grenada would finally break though in the 85’, with Lewis finishing at the back post a cross from the left wing for a 1-0 Grenada lead.
The joy for the home fans did not last long though, as Suriname struck right back in the 87’ courtesy of a flicked-on header by Mitchell te Vrede to pocket a 1-1 draw for the visitors.
Jamaica vs. Honduras
Margins were similarly tight in the final game of the night, as a Demarai Gray goal lifted Jamaica to a 1-0 victory against Honduras at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica.
A couple Honduras chances preceded the first good look at goal, which came from the left boot of Jamaica starlet Dujuan Richards on a shot that banged off the Honduras post and was eventually cleared.
A lapse from the Jamaican defense opened the door for a potential opening goal for Honduras in the 57’, only to be spared thanks to a wayward finish from Luis Palma.
But Jamaica looked a threat any time they made a foray forward and in the 64’ Gray finished off a counterattack with aplomb, racing past the Honduran defense and firing home for a 1-0 Jamaica lead.
Honduras pushed numbers forward in search of an equalizer, but the Jamaican defense never wavered and kept the visiting Catrachos at bay until the final whistle.
