MIAMI, Florida – The Concacaf Nations League Finals are around the corner and the first semifinal pitting the United States and Honduras will feature some key match-ups.
With both teams revealing their final CNLF rosters on Monday, there is a sense of what kind of player battles will be seen on the field when the teams square off in the semifinals on June 3.
Here is a look at three potential key match-ups in the U.S.-Honduras match.
Sergino Dest vs. Alberth Elis
While Dest typically plays at right back with club side FC Barcelona, U.S. head coach Gregg Berhalter has slotted the 20-year-old on the left side of defense in the team’s last several friendlies. The expectation would be Dest in the left back position against Honduras, where he would face the ever-dangerous Elis. The 25-year-old Boavista man wreaks havoc on the right side of the Honduran attack and uses his pace and physical stature to beat defenders. Seeing these two lightning-quick and skilled players square off should be a treat.
Maynor Figueroa vs. Josh Sargent
The age difference between these two is 17 years, but there is a good chance they will get to know each other in the semifinals, with the veteran Figueroa likely heading up the Honduran defense from the center back position and Sargent one of the favorites to start as the center forward for the U.S. The 21-year-old FW has grown as a footballer during the 2020-21 season at Bundesliga side Werder Bremen. Despite the club’s relegation, Sargent managed to notch seven goals and his clever movement and intelligence will be called upon to try to get the best of Figueroa. The Houston Dynamo DF remains one of the best in the Concacaf region and going up against a rising young talent like Sargent will make for an intriguing match-up.
Edwin Rodriguez vs. Tyler Adams
These two midfielders have all of the conditions to become some of the very best in the Concacaf region. The 21-year Rodriguez has taken Concacaf by storm in the last six months, first by earning a place in the Best XI of the 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League with CD Olimpia, followed by leading Honduras to the Final of the 2020 Concacaf Men’s Olympic Qualifying Championship in which he scored a spectacular goal. Rodriguez could well be the main man in the middle for the Honduran attack, which will make Adams an important part of the U.S. team. The 22-year-old plays as a defensive midfielder for Bundesliga club Red Bull Leipzig and is one of the top performers in the league at his position. Assuming his is recovered from a leg injury, Adams will be called upon to make sure Rodriguez doesn’t display his wizardry in midfield.
