SINT-TRUIDEN, Belgium – History was made on Monday in Haiti’s 13-0 victory over Sint Maarten, as Duckens Nazon became the first Haitian National Team player ever to score five goals in the match.
The forward who plays with Sint Truiden in Belgium’s top division now has 15 career international goals and cherishes the moment each time he can find the back of the net for his country, especially in a new tournament like the Concacaf Nations League.
“It’s a very special moment for me to score a goal when I play for Haiti,” said Nazon in an exclusive interview with Concacaf.com
“But in a new tournament it’s an honor and it’s bigger for me than a simple goal,” added Nazon.
You can count Nazon as one of the many players in the region who is happy to bear witness to Concacaf’s Nations League initiative and believes it will help teams like Haiti improve.
“I think the Nations League is a very good opportunity for some types of teams like Haiti, Canada and others like that to be in a very nice group (A). It is also a very good opportunity for a lot of teams to play the Gold Cup as well,” said Nazon.
Sitting atop the 34-team table, Haiti is hoping to continue its momentum in its next three matches against Saint Lucia, Nicaragua and Cuba to help meet its pre-tournament objectives.
“Hopefully we are going to qualify for the A group. I think that’s the first objective and of course play the Gold Cup and go up in the FIFA rankings as well,” said Nazon.
After failing to qualify for the 2017 Gold Cup, Nazon is optimistic that Haiti can make a heralded return to the 2019 edition and play in the tournament a seventh time.
“Last time it was a big mistake from our team. We should have gone to the last Gold Cup. But this year we have to improve ourselves and show to Haiti fans and everyone around Concacaf how disappointed we were and how much we deserve to be there,” concluded Nazon.
