HAMILTON, Bermuda – Bermuda did not have the debut it was hoping for in 2019/20 Concacaf Nations League Qualifying in a 3-1 loss to Aruba, but its optimism is still very much intact as it begins preparation for its next test against Sint Maarten on Friday, October 12.
“Versus Aruba we had some good moments, we possessed the ball well, we just need to execute in front of goal,” said Bermuda MF Zeiko Lewis in an exclusive interview with Concacaf.com.
“There were a lot of positives, but it wasn’t good enough. We need to focus on winning,” added Lewis.
Friday’s clash against Sint Maarten pits two teams that suffered defeats on Matchday 1 of the CNL, with Sint Maarten losing 13-0 to Haiti.
Lewis feels like the three points can be had against Sint Maarten, as long as Bermuda plays its game.
“We are not taking Sint Maarten lightly. We need to show that we can score goals and dominate teams but we cannot underestimate Sint Maarten,” said Lewis.
Teams like Bermuda are faced with the challenge of getting all of its players on the same page. Many times, players adapt to the styles being utilized at their respective club or university, which can then make national team games tricky.
“We have to make sure we correct little things. Guys go and play for other teams and they adapt to where they play, but once back in the national team guys have to change back. We want to get back to our style of play, but overall I would say there is a good feeling within the group,” said Lewis.
The 24-year-old who just wrapped up his club season in Iceland with HK Kopavogs says he is definitely a proponent of the newly formed CNL.
“I really like this tournament. Getting more regular games helps us and other countries, too. Now we have a chance to play more and get more experience. Young players get to step up, coaches get their work in and we’re all getting to know each other better,” concluded Lewis.
