TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras – Former Costa Rica head coach Jorge Luis Pinto will take up the same position with Honduras, the Federación Nacional Autónoma de Fútbol de Honduras (FENAFUTH) announced Saturday through its Facebook page.
“We are able to make the official announcement that Mr. Jorge Luis Pinto is the new D.T (head coach) of the Honduras selection,” stated FENAFUTH in a brief post.
News of the 61-year-old Colombian’s appointment came only four days after Hernan Medford was relieved of his duties. The Costa Rican was handed the reins in late July following Luis Fernando Suarez’s post-World Cup departure.
In eight games under Medford, Honduras compiled a 2W, 2D, 4L record, netting only two goals in its last seven outings. The Catrachos finished fifth in September’s Central American Cup, a placement that forced them into a playoff against French Guiana next year for the last berth in the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Pinto led Costa Rica to an historic quarterfinal appearance in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, where it was eliminated by the Netherlands on penalty kicks after a scoreless draw. Officially, the Ticos went unbeaten in Brazil, going 2-3-0 with wins over Uruguay and Italy.
