MADRID, Spain – Costa Rica international Celso Borges scored two goals in his Spanish La Liga debut to lead Deportivo La Coruña to a 2-1 victory over host Rayo Vallecano on Friday at the Campo de Fútbol de Vallecas.
The 26-year-old midfielder, who joined Deportivo on loan two weeks ago after three years with Sweden’s AIK, had an immediate impact for the Galician side.
Borges put away a rebound off a saved shot in the 10th minute for his first and converted a 72nd minute penalty kick for the game-winner.
“I am very happy with the team, today we showed our teeth and good attitude from everyone,” Borges told Spain’s Canal Plus. “It was said that we hadn’t won away since matchday three and it is good to continue to accumulate to see if we can climb a little more in the table. I feel proud of the team that battled today. In the end, we won and, if it was just or not, I feel that we deserved the victory for that attitude.”
The goals were historic in numerous ways: he became the seventh Costa Rican to score in La Liga history, the second Tico to score in his La Liga debut (51 years after Cayaca had achieved the same feat with Real Murcia) and the second Costa Rican to register a La Liga brace (Alejandro Morera accomplished the feat in 1933 and 1936).
